Over the past six months, SOLON has added 15 solar and energy industry veterans to its Power Plants group, highlighted by the additions of Carl Hurst, Senior Director of Sales and Business Development, and Michael Barsch, Senior Director of Engineering, Procurement and Construction.
Hurst brings 30 years of utility and integrated energy experience. At Johnson Controls he led performance contracting and energy and technology services teams. Hurst also initiated and executed energy efficiency and sustainability projects at Siemens for large commercial, industrial and public sector customers. He began his career with Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy), where he served commercial and industrial customers.
Barsch brings over 20 years of general construction experience in the solar and home building industries, which represents more than 300MW of solar plants constructed. Prior to joining SOLON, Barsch ran SunPower’s European EPC operation for utility-scale power plants.

Jared Schoch, Vice President & General Manager, Power Plants. Schoch oversees SOLON’s commercial and utility-scale power plants business and is leading the company’s solar development expansion across North America. Prior to joining SOLON, Schoch spent four and a half years dramatically growing SunEdison’s commercial and utility-scale solar development businesses throughout the United States. Previously, he spent nearly six years as a leader in business development at Johnson Controls in energy services. Schoch has managed over 1GW of solar project opportunities working with utilities, school districts, cities, counties, hospitals, federal agencies and industrial clients throughout the United States.
Michael Barsch, Senior Director of Engineering, Procurement and Construction. Barsch has 21 years of general construction experience in the solar and home building industries, which represents more than 300MW of solar plants constructed. Prior to joining SOLON, Barsch ran SunPower’s European EPC operation for utility-scale power plants.
Carl Hurst, Senior Director, Sales & Business Development. Hurst is responsible for sales leadership and business growth throughout North America. He brings 30 years of utility and integrated energy experience to SOLON. Prior to SOLON, Hurst led performance contracting, energy and technology services teams at Johnson Controls, as well as initiated and executed energy efficiency and sustainability projects at Siemens for large commercial, industrial and public sector customers throughout the Rocky Mountain region. He has in-depth knowledge of demand response applications as well. Hurst began his career with Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy), where he held multiple positions serving the utility’s commercial and industrial customers for over 17 years.
Sean Lyle, Director, Federal Sector. Lyle’s responsibilities are to develop and manage relationships with Federal agencies, in support of their solar energy programs and missions. In addition, he manages SOLON’s Federal Solar Solutions team to help deliver innovative solutions for ground-mount, rooftop, shaded solar structures, energy storage and microgrid programs with Federal customers. Lyle brings 24 years of energy and industry experience to SOLON, and currently sits on the National Defense Advisory Council for the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) as well as Business Executives for National Security (BENS). Prior to joining SOLON, Lyle worked for Siemens Energy & Environmental Solutions, where he supported government customers with Energy Savings Performance Contracting programs. Prior to working at Siemens, Lyle worked in the Information Technology sector for over 10 years.
Patrick Castro, Director, California. Castro brings 18 years of solar and commercial construction and project management experience to SOLON, having worked with various solar, co-generation and energy management technologies, including Premier Power. Castro is responsible for managing all utility-scale and distributed generation projects in the far west, focused primarily on California, and is based out of Los Angeles, CA.
Heath McLaughlin, Director, Southeast. A former military officer and pilot, McLaughlin has more than 15 years of experience in solar development, project financing and portfolio management. He recently joined SOLON after managing a specialty finance company based in the U.S. Virgin Islands. McLaughlin is based out of Orlando, FL, and responsible for utility-scale and distributed generation projects in GA, NC, SC, TN, AL, MS and FL.
Tony Pawlik, Director, Northeast. Pawlik brings to SOLON 29 years of solar and technology experience. Prior to joining SOLON, Pawlik was with east coast-based Mercury Solar, as their Director of Utility-Scale Projects. Before that, Pawlik was in the technology sector, where he held numerous sales and executive sales leadership positions with Dataram, AMIC, IDT, Samsung, and Texas Instruments. Pawlik brings extensive knowledge of energy solutions for the east coast markets. Pawlik is responsible for NY, NJ, CT, MA, PA and MD and is based out of Hightstown, NJ.
Oscar Rangel, Director, Caribbean. Rangel’s 25 years of experience in the energy service industry and working for utilities includes leadership positions at Johnson Controls, Siemens and Xcel Energy. Rangel has extensive experience providing energy solutions that includes renewable energy to state and local government, K-12, industrial and public sectors. He is currently working on utility-scale and distributed generation projects in Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Rangel is based out of San Juan, Puerto Rico and is native to the Caribbean. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
Ron Puryear, Director, Southwest. Puryear has 26 years of energy industry and power plant experience, with over 800MW of electric power generation operating today. Puryear has in-depth knowledge of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar, wind, nuclear, energy efficiency, industrial control systems and power electronics. Prior to SOLON, Puryear’s sales leadership experience included stints at AREVA Solar, WESCO International, LG Industries and Emerson Electric. Puryear is responsible for utility-scale projects in AZ, TX, CO, NV and NM and is based out of Phoenix, AZ.
Luke Alm, Business Development Manager, Southwest Distributed Generation. Alm brings over 7 years of business development experience to SOLON in various services markets, including finance. He has consistently been ranked in the top 5 for customer service and satisfaction while working for leading national companies. Alm is responsible for distributed generation projects in AZ, TX, CO, NV and NM and is based out of Phoenix, AZ.
