As a California resident and as the Regional President for NRG Energy in the West, I enjoy living in a place that embraces technology and transformation of the energy landscape. In accelerating the race toward a clean energy future, NRG understands that in order to succeed, we must partner with those who share our vision. Our current and past partnerships with companies like Boeing, Bechtel, MGM, Siemens and even Google have contributed to some of the most astonishing and technologically-advanced energy facilities in the world.
Today, we’ll celebrate the completion of the NRG Solar Terrace as well as the photovoltaic (PV) solar systems for the three NRG Energy Bridges at the San Francisco 49ers new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. This represents an important continuation of our relationship with yet another one of our major professional football stadiums. And for this cutting edge project, it only made sense for us to partner with one of the most successful professional football teams in America and create an energy blueprint for others to follow.
From the outset of this project, we worked with the team and various partners to differentiate Levi’s Stadium from any other venue in the world. Located in Silicon Valley, the country’s center for technological development, this marvel is more than just the new home of the 49ers. Our innovative work makes Levi’s Stadium the first professional football stadium in the U.S. be eligible for LEED Gold certification, and the first professional sports venue in California which hopes to generate enough energy to meet the power demands for all 49ers regular season home games with the goal to achieve a net zero energy use.
This venue showcases NRG’s innovative products to 49er fans, our customers, and the world. NRG eVgo electric car charging stations, state-of-the-art solar arrays across three bridges leading into the stadium and the NRG Solar Terrace are just a few of the design and technological elements we knew we had to implement to give this stadium its own identity. Take a quick look around the NRG Solar Terrace; we’re anticipating exciting fan reactions when the stadium officially opens next month!
Levi’s Stadium is an architectural marvel, but more than that, the stadium is a testament to the power, performance and possibility of renewable, clean energy. I am proud that NRG is an integral part of the stadium, and I know we’re looking forward to the start of the season and showing everyone the boundless possibilities of a clean energy future. The 49ers organization has come to play and we are honored to be their partner in their sustainability efforts. We’ve introduced energy-efficient measures to stadiums across the county and we’re thrilled to be able to do this in California.
