REA hails Wales’ First Full Scale Tidal Energy Generator

Tidal Energy and Eco2's tidal energy generator in Pembroke Port, Wales

Wales’ first full-scale tidal energy generator will be unveiled today at Pembroke Port by the First Minister of Wales, the Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones AM [1]. The DeltaStream device, developed by REA members Tidal Energy Ltd and Eco2, is the first private marine project to be fully developed in Wales and will be installed in Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire.

REA Chief Executive Dr Nina Skorupska, present at today’s unveiling, said:

“Congratulations to Tidal Energy Ltd and Eco2 on this tremendous feat of engineering. Our members are leading the way in developing the technology to secure a reliable, home-grown, low-carbon energy future.

“Many of our ocean energy members are currently racing to deploy the first wave or tidal farm, with several of these types of devices instead of just one. When that happens the sector will move into mass production, costs will fall dramatically, and wave and tidal will be well on their way to becoming major players in the UK energy system.”

The Renewable Energy Association represents renewable energy producers and promotes the use of all forms of renewable energy in the UK across power, heat, transport and renewable gas. It is the largest renewable energy trade association in the UK, with approximately 1,000 members, ranging from major multinationals to sole traders. For more information, visit: www.r-e-a.net
