Job Description

Purpose of Role:

Commercialization Food Scientist/Specialist develops, executes, and manages commercialization processes at the plant level for new products or improvement of existing products. Successful candidate must be able to work effectively as a team player, possess strong communication skills, and interact across departmental boundaries, minimizing conflict, and maximizing interdepartmental good will.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Work closely with Product Developers, Project Managers, Operations, Procurement, Regulatory and QA teams in the commercialization process of new products and/or transition of existing products.
  2. Develop and manage the facility’s commercialization processes and tools to streamline the upstream NPD (new product development) process prior to hand off to the Ops team.
  3. Understand Operational limitations and capabilities at the facility during the development of new products or processes to meet FSQA standards, customer’s expectations, and cost target.
  4. Perform strong technical problem-solving skills related to the development, manufacturing, and/or modification of food products and processes.
  5. Efficiently plan and coordinate product/process trials using scientific experimental design
  6. Daily tasks include portion tool (e.g. scoops) validation, conduct yield study for new processes, processing equipment testing, verify packaging fit and test packaging performance for new and existing products
  7. Collaborate with QA to oversee shelf-life validation studies, which include conducting sensory evaluation and sending samples for microbiological evaluation at the third-party lab
  8. Document and evaluate trial data and make appropriate recommendations by reporting progress to the cross-functional team through written and/or oral reports on a regular basis
  9. Work closely with Maintenance teams in sourcing and commissioning appropriate equipment or tools for specific application as needed for the projects.
  10. Create and manage process development documents, which includes but not limited to training materials for QA or production personnel, new SOP’s, recipe cards, job aids/gold standards, batch sheets, etc.
  11. Conduct packaging tests, which include MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) and seal integrity tests.
  12. Train Operations and QA teams on new procedures or processes for new product launches


  • Excellent communication skills-written, verbal and interpersonal
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, other Biological Sciences, or Engineering
  • 3-5 years of experience in Food Product and Process Development preferred. Manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Excellent documentation and record keeping
  • Detail oriented with high organization and time management skills
  • Must have a “can-do” attitude to work in a hectic environment that is evolving and growing
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint; able to learn new programs
  • Knowledge of GMP, HACCP, Food Safety and Food Labeling (FDA and USDA).
  • Experience in Packaging, Fresh-Cut, Deli products and MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) a plus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
  • Stand and walk for long period of time
  • Work in a refrigerated environment
  • Must be able to safely lift 25 pounds
