Job Description:

The Manship School of Mass Communication enrolls about 750 undergraduate majors and another 450 pre-mass communication majors each year. This job will consist of three areas of responsibility: 1) academic counselor for undergraduate student advising/counseling; 2) Lead academic advisor for graduate students 3) Administrative duties such as academic intervention outreach. This position will have independent authority to address complex counseling problems and will be capable of substituting for the Assistant Dean of Student Services when needed.

Job Responsibilities:

Academic counselor to undergraduate students with the ability and authority to address counseling problems, scholastic requirements and academic problems. Provides academic advising to students on a daily basis. This includes but is not limited to course advising, admission to School (from other colleges and universities, major-only add requests, 3+3 pre-law program, prospective students, and re-entry students) study abroad enrollment approval, interpretation of college and university policies, adding/changing minors & concentrations, IDL/ODL courses, credit exam forms and financial aid SAP approvals and certification of athletes. 50%

Lead academic counselor in advising graduate students regarding program requirements, completing students' course scheduling, Graduate School regulations, etc. Processes requests for graduate faculty nominations, student exams and other forms. Assists with graduate student recruiting, admissions processing, orientation and graduation. Attends graduate committee meetings and records minutes; uses Graduate School software and databases. 20%

Participates in the college recruiting programs including: attendance of events, campus visitor scheduling, development of college presentations/programming for various recruiting events, college presenter, welcome events, and new student orientation events. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean, Associate Deans or Assistant Dean. 10%

Makes administrative decisions related to complex matters such as graduation problems and college academic action. Reviews appeals related to Comprehensive Academic Tracking (CATS); works CATS nominate reports. 10%

Represents School on the university Academic Intervention Team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to monitoring case reports, case management; referring students to the appropriate campus resources; main point of contact for students in need of academic intervention; and oversees the midterm outreach project. 5%

Serves on committee for Admissions, Standards; Honors and Scholarships; Retention and Recruitment. Responsible for the distribution of application materials to members of the Admissions committee; coordinating annual admissions committee meetings, updating admission decision emails and responsible for updating students program of study/classification in the student records database. 5%

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelors degree and 3 years of experience 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Master’s degree in counseling, social work or related field in behavioral science; 3 years’ experience 

Specific experience: Academic or career counseling experience in a university setting, excellent human relations skills, and proficient writing ability.
