Job Description

This is the third level of the Engineering classification with the Pike Engineering’s Professional Services team that serves the electric utility industry. This position provides engineering and technical expertise to solve problems for electrical distribution systems operation and maintenance functions, under minimum supervision of senior engineers and project managers.

The Professional Services team helps clients with electric system planning, grid analytics, renewable energy and battery storage integration, and grid modernization efforts, among other things. Incumbents are expected to know or develop skills in electrical distribution system planning, battery energy storage, renewable generation systems and software packages including CYME, Synergi, Milsoft PSCAD and ETAP.

Incumbents should have an ability to quickly master technical engineering concepts and learn complex modeling software. The incumbent will be involved in helping develop solutions and customer deliverables in the form of the technical reports and circuit models that help customers in the reliable and economic operation of, and modernization of, their electric distribution systems. Incumbents should have the working knowledge with industry trends including Distributed Energy Resources (DER) like solar power and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as well as Smart Grid technologies.


Under minimum supervision in the area of power delivery and grid analysis, the incumbent will provide:

 Possess engineering/technical expertise in the areas of distributed energy resources, solar/battery storage integration, & Smart Grid Technologies to be able to provide guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems arising from the increase penetration of distributed energy resources which affects the operations and maintenance functions of electrical distribution grids.

 Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities deliverables in the form of technical reports and circuit models that help customers in the reliable and economic operation of, and modernization of, their electric distribution systems.

 Providethorough, timely, and accurate technical reports, correspondence, electrical circuit model documentation, short-circuit and volt/var optimization calculations, and one/three-line diagrams and sketches.

 Continuous improvement of job-related engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.

 Effective oral and written communication skills.

 Should be able to maintain electrical circuit models and data files.

 Support the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally.

 Interact with customer’s internal engineers and technical personnel on a day-to-day basis.

 Develop and maintain professional relationships with customers.

 Monitor deliverables, schedules, and present solutions to the client.

 Perform otherduties as assigned by management.

Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs.


5-7 Year(s) Experience as an Engineer with the electrical industry in the field of power delivery.


Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) license or Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.


As needed for the job and employee development.

B. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Desired Skills/Abilities

+ Knowledgeable about Battery Energy Storage Systems and renewable energy including solar and wind.

+ Knowledgeable about distributed generation, grid modernization, and smart grid concepts and technologies.

+ Understanding of programming concepts and engineering applications.

+ Knowledge of some programing language to leverage power system analysis software.

+ Python and R knowledge is a plus.

Desired Qualifications

+ Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

+ Passed Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

+ Understanding of basic principles of project management

+ Experience in the utility industry.

+ Experience with some of the circuit analysis software tools such as: CYME, Synergi, Milsoft, PSCAD, PSSE, ETAP, SKM.

+ Traditional and non-traditional distribution system planning.

+ Familiar with the circuit analysis and protection-coordination concepts.

+ DER (Distributed Energy Resources) interconnection studies.

+ Understanding of the distribution circuit devices and controls.

+ Basic understanding of Distribution Substation equipment and controls.

+ Fundamentals of Transmission system operations.

+ Understanding of Electrical Energy Delivery Business
