### Working/Functional Title

Superconducting Magnet Engineer

### Position Summary

**Major Duties and Position Responsibilities**

- Perform EM design of superconducting dipole, quadrupole, and multipole magnet systems using LTS and HTS conductors. \[20%\]
- Participate in developing next-generation accelerator magnet technology. \[20%\]
- Support FRIB superconducting magnet operation, including training operation staff, developing operation procedures, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues. \[10%\]
- Perform quench analysis and design quench protection scheme to ensure operational safety. \[10%\]
- Assist in commissioning and mapping of the magnet systems. \[10%\]
- Assist in the mechanical design of the superconducting magnets. \[10%\]
- Develop technical specifications for superconducting magnet systems and subcomponents for procurement and provide technical supervision of the procurement if needed, which includes reviewing vendor tests and results, non-conformance reports, and witness vendor factory tests. \[10%\]
- Establish and manage engineering standards and procedures, support the design review process, the value engineering program. \[5%\]
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. \[5%\]

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**

- Knowledge and experience in design, construction, and test of superconducting magnets with accelerator system components, cryogenic and control system
- Knowledge and experience with FEA of EM analysis,1-D or 2-D quench analysis codes and CAD
- Ability to serve as the subject matter expert on superconducting magnets and provide technical guidance and support for coil winding and superconducting magnet construction
- Ability to comply with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences pertaining to the practice of engineering for FRIB
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites

### Required Degree

Masters -Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

### Minimum Requirements

- Advanced degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (or related field) with demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating large-scale superconducting magnets, cryogenic, and related support systems
- 3+ years of experience 
- Nationally recognized leader in field of expertise

### Desired Qualifications

- Prior experience in superconducting accelerator magnets, accelerator system components, various cryogenic systems and distributed control systems
- Experience with FEA (Maxwell, COMSOL Multiphysics, Opera, CST studio), Quench analysis codes (Matlab, Python, C, C++, and etc.), and CAD (Solidworks, Auto CAD)
