The Engineer, Manager is responsible for managing engineering projects from evaluation, through design and implementation. This position will assist and supervise other engineers in developing and completing engineering services; provide project management on larger/more complicated projects; and prepare technical designs, specifications, reports, and construction cost estimates.

The Engineer, Manager will also direct and manage Valley Science and Engineering drafting and engineering resources for workload, scheduling, prioritization, staff coaching, productivity, and continual improvement. This includes reviewing the work produced by the engineering group for quality assurances purposes. This position will also junior engineering staff, identify and develop project leads, and assist in preparation of written scopes of work and cost proposals for new projects. This position is also expected to be the primary Responsible Charge/Principal Engineer as required by individual state licensing boards for maintaining engineering business permits.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluation, report preparation, and design of irrigation systems and water/wastewater treatment/conveyance systems with a focus on process design, pretreatment, equipment, selection
  • Direct and manage Valley Science and Engineering drafting and engineering resources for plan sheet and specification development and improvement for the engineering group.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff
  • Identify and develop project leads and assist in preparation of written scopes of work and cost proposals for new projects.
  • Plan and execute the project management of public sector, industrial and agricultural water and wastewater design projects.
  • Manage project coordination including design, scope of work, cost estimating, and contract negotiations.
  • Manage, monitor, and review contracts and contractors to ensure compliance with contractual obligations including administering change orders and estimates.
  • Work closely with various design, engineering, and environmental consultants, developers, builders, public agencies, and contractors to ensure that city ordinances and standards are upheld, and project schedules are met.
  • Prepare project status reports.
  • Visit clients and project sites.
  • Provide responsible, complex support, and assistance to the project managers with assigned projects and regularly update project status, schedules of completion, project issues, and needed modifications.
  • Prepare and review project cost estimates and monitor construction project account funding.
  • Administration of budgets and applicable reports
  • Maintain a filing system containing all project plans, studies, construction documents, and related materials.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service This position reports into the Director of Technical Sales and has no direct reports.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Bachelors in an appropriate engineering discipline with 6+ years relevant experience OR Associates Degree with 8+ years relevant experience OR 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Licensed Professional Engineer registration with ability to obtain reciprocity in multiple states (active NCEES registration is preferred).
  • Ability to perform field activities (e.g., stoop, lift up to 40 pounds from floor to waist high, walk, etc.)
  • Ability to travel up to twenty- five percent of the time
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Experience with pump and piping networks for large irrigation projects, water treatment/reuse, and managing engineering and drafting staff.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil or Mechanized Agriculture Engineering is preferred
  • Master’s Degree in applicable engineering discipline
  • Strong oral and excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to colleagues, clients, and regulators
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple, simultaneous priorities
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and planning skills

  • Working experience and understanding of AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Consulting experience with target clients (agriculture and food industry)

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office and field setting; however, the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office, production area, shipping warehouse, dealerships, and international site facilities as assigned. The incumbent has to be able to support Sales, Marketing, Service, Engineering and Operations. This support includes visits to both indoor and outdoor locations during all seasons of the year. The Technical Sales Manager must be willing and able to travel both locally and to the field approximately up to 75% of the year and, in uncommon instances, at short notice. The work environment can be fast-paced and demanding especially during peak sales seasons. Although some of the administrative tasks are repetitive and may seem mundane, the job has new challenges every day.

Most of the tasks are sedentary tasks. Employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to move around, use hands to type, handle, feel, grasp, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. It is rare that an employee would have to climb up to an elevated height such as from a ladder, but the incumbent does have to have the ability to climb stairs as some areas of the plant and dealer’s offices can only be accessed by climbing a flight of stairs. There are trips to grower’s fields and the employee needs to have the ability to move about the crop area. The employee needs to be able to get him/herself to and from different sites using a vehicle or an airplane.
