**Job Description**

The Stakeholder Engagement and Outreach research portfolio at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a graduate intern with experience in energy equity and justice, community engagement, policy, social science research, and economic development to contribute to the WINDExchange Initiative. This work will focus on improving community members’ access to both technological and social scientific information about wind energy and advancing energy equity through social science research. Specific projects that the successful candidate may work on include:

+ Research into the creation and distribution of community benefits related to wind energy development

+ Convening a Wind Energy Equity Community of Practice

+ Development of a community-facing web tool for navigating wind energy research and resources

+ Production of webinars to inform the public about different aspects of wind energy.

For these projects, energy equity generally refers to supporting an equitable (or just) clean energy transition that includes and prioritizes economic and social participation in the transition of underserved or disadvantaged communities. Energy equity in this context includes access to clean energy but is intended to go beyond access to encompass a broad suite of the benefits that clean energy can provide accruing to or staying within the community that produces the clean energy (e.g., wealth creation opportunities). Social science research, practitioner networks, and increased access to relevant information can bolster energy equity through their potential to equip community members and decision-makers with a diverse range of research findings and peer experiences that will inform equity-oriented energy planning.

The successful candidate may support several projects and lead many sub-tasks, including conducting stakeholder interviews, convening roundtable conversations with researchers and practitioners, assisting in web tool design and prototyping, and sharing information with communities through resource development. Typical tasks may include:

+ Conduct outreach to community organizations, local/state representatives, and subject matter experts

+ Collaborate with web design team to develop a wind energy community planning tool

+ Interview members of target audiences of the WINDExchange website

+ Develop resources to support knowledge sharing between stakeholders

+ Assist in writing quality reports analyzing energy policy, siting, and economic development issues

+ Conduct literature reviews and annotated bibliographies

+ Advise researchers and practitioners across NREL on best practices for effectively integrating energy equity in projects, programs, or initiatives

+ Facilitate knowledge sharing to gather community and stakeholder input on energy equity in the context of wind energy deployment

+ Leverage community engagement and analysis skills to understand barriers to wind energy deployment

+ Contribute to social science research on wind energy’s community and economic impacts

+ Develop informational materials and assist with planning for educational webinars for the public

The hiring team anticipates accepting two interns for this position.


**Basic Qualifications**

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

**Additional Required Qualifications**

+ Demonstrated skill in stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and interviewing

+ Strong writing and research skills

+ Prior experience applying research, methodologies, or frameworks for energy equity in communities is desirable for this position.

+ Prior experience through research or stakeholder engagement with underserved or frontline communities.

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ Relevant coursework or experience in relevant field, which could include energy policy, public policy, planning, energy ethics, resilience, regulation, environmental justice, decarbonization, sustainability, and/or climate mitigation

+ Experience with stakeholder engagement

+ Interest in or experience with user-oriented and accessible design

+ Familiarity with wind energy technology and community considerations

+ Experience working with community-based organizations

+ Demonstrated desire to contribute to the literature on energy equity in the clean energy transition

+ Experience with social science research methods and data analysis


**Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)**

Job Profile: Graduate I / Annual Salary Range: $41,600 - $66,600

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

**Benefits Summary**

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
