About you and this role

In this role, the candidate will provide technical support to Scientists, Specialists, and R&D Technologists in the preparation and execution of synthesis experiments in PSP&H Catalyst Scale Up R&D. The candidate will act as the primary support for discovery and scale-up synthesis and provide operational support in the Catalyst R&D work group and in partnership with other teams in Process & Catalyst R&D. The candidate will also champion a safety-first working environment and EH&S culture.

Responsibilities

  • Works as part of a laboratory team to support chemists and engineers in the synthesis and evaluation of new polyolefin catalysts in Catalyst Scale-Up operations.
  • Manages and safely executes synthesis laboratory work requests, practices the scientific method, and documents results in an appropriate manner (ELN, supplier technical packages etc.)
  • Develops experimental plans for review/approval by Project Leader or Technology Leader, executes approved plans by performing routine scale up or laboratory tasks or procedures.
  • Achieves project goals and meets timelines using technical, role-specific skills and experience, and introduces new procedures to provide value to work group.
  • Provides leadership to new team members in the synthesis and scale-up space.
  • Develops process operations expertise within Catalyst R&D and in specific procedures, equipment, or instruments associated with catalyst prep systems.
  • Responsible for safety and organizational activities such as chemical inventory implementation, RCRA hazardous waste management and disposal, and RDSIMS sample shipping.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemistry or relevant military experience at or above a U.S. E6 ranking OR Canadian Petty Officer 2nd Class ranking.
  • 1+ year of experience in a laboratory setting handling hazardous chemicals.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with the safe handling of air- and moisture-sensitive chemical compounds and their syntheses in a laboratory setting. 
  • Experience with executing the Scientific Method and utilizing small molecule characterization techniques.
  • Experience using safety equipment to drive chemical synthesis optimization.
  • Experience with Electronic Lab Notebook technology and/or documentation of scientific results
  • Being proficient in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel
  • Demonstrating competencies in the areas of leadership, initiative, teamwork, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Ensuring a safe work environment by working safely and, complying with environmental, health and safety standards
  • Strong work ethic and being able to remain productive in an empowered team environment.
