Job Description

NREL’s National Wind Technology Center has an immediate opening for a Researcher supporting projects focused on characterizing technology innovation and research needs and impacts. More specifically, the role will support and take on model development and analyses that seek to understand cost reduction potential, grid and societal value, and market deployment and diffusion trends for wind energy systems of many scales. Potential studies pursued by the successful candidate will focus on R&D pathways and innovation needs as well as market and policy impacts to inform research opportunities for wind power in the context of current and future energy systems.  

The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of experienced NREL researchers and support a variety of customers including the US Department of Energy Wind Energy Technologies Office. The successful candidate will also work collaboratively with other National Laboratories and industry partners. Prior experience in wind energy system design and optimization, techno-economic cost modeling, and electricity system value analysis are desired. 

Typical tasks may include: 

  • Strategize and participate in software development activities for techno-economic analysis of wind energy systems of all scales and spanning land-based and offshore wind applications. 
  • Collaborate and coordinate across research teams and groups to ensure coverage of requisite technical and wind energy skillsets among the interdisciplinary team that supports this work. 
  • Support the development and application of new methods to inform R&D impacts from innovation as well as impacts on technology and system cost and market value from specific technology advancements. 
  • Work to develop and collect data and support wind energy techno-economic analysis model development that illuminates new or different impacts on electricity markets, wildlife impacts, and human considerations.
  • Lead and contribute to reports, journal articles, presentations, and communications for internal and external stakeholders. 


Basic Qualifications

Relevant Master's Degree. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience with research or analysis of distributed or land-based or offshore energy systems.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, collaboration, and teaming skills.
  • Highly detail oriented.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Strong technical writing and ability to write and communicate to a diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in python-based software development.
  • Understanding of land-based utility, offshore and distributed scale wind energy system technologies and trends.
  • Prior experience in techno-economic analysis, wind system engineering, software development, and electricity system market value assessments.


Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600
