Field Garden/ Farmacy Bus Manager Contract Description

This contract is the equivalent of a full time position based on a 40 hours work week

*Note – This job does require you to work with persons incarcerated at the Walton County Jail. 

 Role and Responsibilities

 Field Garden and Harvest maintenance

  • Provide consistent baseline maintenance for sustainable plant and soil health including seeding, weeding, insect control, harvest, crop rotation, and cover cropping
  • Coordinate crop planning to support produce needs of Mobile Market and other community programs including Farm to School efforts
  • Plant and provide seasonal produce, including a winter harvest, for Mobile Market and county Farm to School efforts
  • Develop and execute procedure for clean and safe produce harvest and post-harvest management following established Garden Food Safety Plan
  • Coordinate with programs supported by the Field Garden for delivery/pickup of available produce
  • Clean, organize and maintain garden tools and garden shed
  • Maintain drip irrigation system and implements irrigation schedule
  • Manage composting systems for garden waste
  • Develop and maintain a planting schedule, seasonal records, and other appropriate documentation
  • Communicate regularly with community programs on seed orders, planting, harvest dates, and programming logistics

Community engagement

  • Oversee Grow a Row for Walton
    • Engage in recruitment of community volunteers to support garden activities
    • Pursue local partnerships for the maintenance, support, and use of the space
    • Offer technical assistance to area community garden efforts
    • Facilitate education activities at the garden for youth and adults
    • Collect data regularly, thoroughly, and reliably on all activities for evaluation and grant reporting
    • Work with Walton Local Food Alliance
    • Be a liaison between the schools and Walton Wellness in regards to Farm to school work.
    • Work with Carver Middle School Agriculture Department

For Profit pop–up Farmer’s Market

  • Oversee the for profit Farmer’s Market
  • Work with partner farms in securing produce for sale
  • Mange all appropriate licenses and safety regulations for selling to the public
  • Create new outlets for pop- up markets in and outside Walton Co.

  Inmate Engagement in the Field Garden

  • Coordinate and increase opportunities for inmate to work in the garden
  • Explore ways to formalize garden-based education opportunities for inmates
  • Investigate agriculture-based job placement opportunities for released inmates
  • Engage jail kitchen/cafeteria staff on local food procurement and food waste opportunities

 Farmacy Bus Manager

  • Assist Walton Wellness Executive Director in the overall maintenance of the bus
  • Drive the bus to Walton Wellness community events
  • Assist in event implementation

Other duties

  • Aside from the aforementioned roles and responsibilities, all Walton Wellness staff members are asked to provide assistance when needed to support the WW team in furthering its mission of getting county citizens eating healthy and moving. This may include, but is not limited to: providing back-up on other WW programming, sitting on and/or leading ad hoc committees for events, and relationship building.

 Qualifications

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or related field or 3 years of experience in crop production, garden management or related field.

  • Commitment to the local healthy food movement and enthusiasm for engaging others on gardening and food issues
  • A positive attitude, flexible nature, and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and provide recommendations to leadership on garden matters including safety
  • Strong working knowledge of edible garden plants (fruiting vines, fruit and nut trees, herbs, vegetables) and sustainable food gardening
  • The ability to work outdoors year-round in all kinds of weather and to lift 50 pounds or more. 
  • Experience in community organizing and working with volunteers of diverse background
  • Teaching/education experience with both children and adults
  • Basic computer skills, email and word processing
  • Public speaking experience or ability preferred
  • Must have a clean criminal history, background check required.
