Underground Storage Tank Inspector / Program Support

This position provides technical and programmatic support to EPA's Underground Storage Tank (UST) and Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) program in Indian Country within EPA Region 8.

  • Duties:
    • Conduct quarterly groundwater sampling at Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Sites in Indian Country in Region 8.   30%
    • Conduct routine UST inspections including, but not limited to: inspection preparation; inspection follow-up; report writing; and data entry.   25%
    • Review site assessment and remedial action reports and provide comments and recommendations.    20%
    • Review, update, verify and maintain EPA?s Underground Storage Tank (UST) database on Indian Reservations in MT. This will be done by a combination of site visits; review of State, Tribal, and EPA files; review of self-certifications; and outreach to owners and operators of unregistered USTs. Initiatives including inventory mailings, data management, and providing technical assistance over the phone.    15%
    • Receive reports of Underground Storage Tank (UST) closures or changes-in-service and enter appropriate information in the EPA database. Review UST closure plans and conduct UST closure inspections for compliance with EPA regulations.   5%
    • Review plans for site assessment and correction action received from Underground Storage Tank (UST) owners/operators on Indian Reservations in MT for compliance with EPA laws and regulation, and good practices   5%

    Other:

    • EPA UST Inspector Training OSHA 24/40 hours Health and Safety Training OSHA 8 hour Health and Safety Training (annually, after initial training) EPA Basic Inspector Training CPR and First Aid Training (annually and every two years, respectively) Computer training courses; available on an as needed basis GPS Training

    • Overnight travel: 1-10 days/month
    • Air travel anticipated: 1-10 days/month,
    • Rental cars: 1-10 days/month
    • Health Safety Training: Employee will be required to take the 40 hour safety course from a local contractor; and will take the refresher course annually with EPA.

    • Safety Gear Use: The use of safety equipment will be determined based on the site safety plan which will be specific for each facility inspected.

Qualifications:

BA/BS Degree in Environmental Studies, Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining OR Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in Science related field Previously completed training in Underground Storage Tank (UST) Inspections and/or Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Remediation

  • Working knowledge of Underground Storage Tank (UST) and/or Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Program.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written), organizational skills and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage several concurrent tasks and be accountable to several people.
  • Experience required with MS Word, Fax, Copying Machine, Scanner

Pay rate: $12.72 per hour This is the maximum amount budgeted through the
grants to support this program.
