Job Description

The Accokeek Foundation is seeking a seasoned and dynamic leader to direct daily farm operations using historical research and best practices for cultural interpretation, animal husbandry, and multispecies, rotational grazing. The Farm Manager will design and implement systems to maximize production of annual crops, vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, livestock, and other products consistent with historic interpretation best practices.

The Farm Manager also directs the design and implementation of on-farm education of apprentices, interns, and volunteers. The Farm Manager will work closely with the Education and Interpretation team to ensure that education objectives are being met, including leading farm tours, assisting with event preparation, and on-farm demonstrations pertaining to agriculture. The Farm Manager will also work closely with the Operations team in the maintenance and upkeep of infrastructure related to livestock housing and care, including fencing, barns and stables, paddocks and pastures, storage facilities, and farm machinery. The Farm Manager will train and supervise the Regenerative Ag Coordinator and Livestock Herder. The Farm Manager will report directly to the Vice President.


Heritage Livestock

 Responsible for the care and welfare of all livestock operations.

 Monitor and ensure timely feed and hay purchases, delivery and/or production.

 Maintain thorough and accurate breed registration and health records of living collections of livestock to breed association standards for American Milking Devon cattle, Hog Island sheep, Ossabaw hogs, and select poultry.

 Create a grazing plan at the beginning of each growing, and non-growing season using planned rotational grazing principles, then executing that plan, making necessary adjustments as needed based on available forage.

 Develop a network of reputable buyers and breeder and an annual marketing plan to sell, trade, or share breeding.

 Maintain and repair all infrastructure related to livestock housing and care, including fencing, barns and stables, paddocks and pastures, storage facilities, and related equipment

Farm and Gardens

 Ensure an authentic and accurate recreation of a middle-class family farmstead in Southern Maryland that incorporates African American and Native American interpretation and demonstration in a historically and culturally appropriate context.

 Create and guide the implementation of an annual production plan and corresponding budget of Heirloom, multi-cultural and Native crops in the fields and gardens.

 Maintain thorough and accurate records and maps of crop plans, crops actually grown, rotation schemes, soil fertility records, and pest control practices.

 Ensure that all modern tools, machinery and equipment are removed from the farm site, and are properly maintained and stored at the end of each day.

 Procure and maintain a collection of historic farm tools.  

Organizational Management

 Serve as the agricultural spokesperson at local and regional events.

 Contribute to the Foundation’s big-picture organizational planning including development of strategic initiatives and resource planning.

 Develop and manage program and project budgets ensuring appropriate use of funds.

 Lead agriculture work plans and measurable outcomes including staff, interns, volunteers, and apprentices.

 Support grants management and facilitate reporting.

Qualifications 

Minimum of three years of public gardening and/or farming experience with at least 2 years of proven large animal husbandry.

 Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.

 Experience with veterinary care of livestock including health assessments and administering medications when needed.

 Experience with farm machinery and small engine repair highly desired.

 Knowledge of Southern Maryland history and cultural heritage preferred

 Attention to detail with excellent time management and organizational skills.

 Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 Proficient use of technology and online programs for record keeping, communications, and planning, including Office 365 and mapping software

 Display professional maturity and strong interpersonal skills, positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, strategic thinking, and good listening ability.

Compensation and Benefits This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
