Job Description

Contributing to optimising and securing the gross margin for the generation and retail asset portfolio through the origination, negotiation and ongoing management of standard derivative and structured / bespoke contracts and trading arrangements for physical and financial commodities (including gas, power, emissions and environmental products).

Being responsible for optimising and securing the gross margin for the generation and retail asset portfolio through the origination, negotiation and ongoing management of structured contracts and trading arrangements for physical and financial commodities (including gas, power, emissions and environmental products).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor relevant commodity markets and assess implications for generation and retail and contracted assets.
  • Contribute to the delivery or exceedance of budgeted gross margin for merchant assets.
  • Contribute to the effective development and implementation of trading and commercial strategies and management of commodity market risk exposures within relevant limits.
  • Initiate, negotiate, conclude and manage structured transactions and commercial arrangements with market counterparties.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with market counterparties.
  • Comply with relevant legislation, industry codes of practice, delegated authorities, risk polices, IPR Code of Conduct and related controls.
  • Contribute to the effective management of relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the effective management of the interface with the retail business.
  • Assist with the implementation and ongoing management of trading related IT systems.
  • Continual review and improvement of management systems and business processes.
  • Maintain and develop good working relationships and ensure effective communications with internal stakeholders, including asset management, Risk Management, Finance, IT, Strategy and Regulatory Affairs and Business Development.
  • Maintain and understanding of the Business Area budget and medium term planning processes and Trading and Portfolio Management planning activities.
  • Responsible for the origination, negotiation and ongoing management of structured / non-structured contracts and trading arrangements for physical and financial commodities (including gas, power, emissions and environmental products). Includes the negotiation of contract amendments and management of contractual disputes.
  • Assist in ensuring that the operational requirements for structured contracts and trading arrangements are implemented.
  • Provide high quality and timely reports to Trading and Portfolio Management, Business Area management and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in responding to relevant recommendations arising from audit assessments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Tertiary degree in relevant discipline.
  • 2+ years experience in commodity and other relevant markets related to the power generation and retail sectors, including compliance with financial services legislation and regulations.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of the development, negotiation and management of structured contracts associated with managing merchant generation and retail commodity exposures (gas, power, emissions and environmental products).
  • Analytical thinker, ability to deal with complex market arrangements and to understand and specify models and analysis required to support commercial decisions and understand market conditions.
  • Intermediate-Advanced IT competency – Microsoft Office, gas and power market notification and ETRM.
  • Understanding of power generation and power/gas retail commercial operations and asset backed trading, preferably in Australia.
