The Director of Field Applications Engineering will be responsible for leading the US team of Field Applications Engineers with a focus on enabling sales by building customer relationships through technical support activities. The Director of Field Applications Engineering will work with the sales team and Civil Engineering Team to define the technical content of proposals including tracker specifications, configurations and foundation design and site layout. In addition to managing the group, the Director will have some specific account responsibilities.
The Director of Field Applications Engineering will drive the organization to understand customer metrics and concerns, and work to improve Array's offerings to better meet customer needs. The Director and team will build technical relationships at the customer level, advocate for the customer within Array by defining and prioritizing customer requirements, and identify new opportunities for Array to add value. This position is the primary technical relationship contact for the customer during the pre-sales process. Ideally, customers would view the Director of Field Applications Engineering as an extension of the customer's engineering group.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Manage Array’s US Field Applications Engineering team. Provide superior technical sales support to enterprise customers in the US market.
+ Lead team to provide pre- and post-sales technical consulting services to US customers.
+ Support Array’s sales team through direct customer visits and technical interaction.
+ Provide product configuration and specifications for a highly technical, configurable product.
+ Understand in depth customer’s technical concerns and decision variables and leverage to tailor the product and service offering to win projects.
+ Work with the Sales, Engineering and Product Management teams to address particularly challenging customer requirements.
+ Represent Array engineering interests, projects, and goals in customer meetings.
+ Oversee and manage the project design service limits and process controls of the Field Application Engineering department.
+ Be voice of engineering for sales and marketing strategy
+ Ensure the Engineering team is properly aligned with sales and marketing strategy, new product introduction schedules, and other company priorities.
+ Engage and collaborate with customer engineering teams and other Array departments on project design and product selection, with the goal of product optimization.
+ Partner with customers and Product Management to identify opportunities for product innovation or systems solutions that results in breakthrough technology.
+ Support Engineering by facilitating Voice of Customer feedback on new product concepts and designs.
+ Represent customers’ technical interests in new product design projects.
+ Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems.
+ Work with Engineering Sales Support Operations Manager to develop, implement, manage, and control Field Applications Engineering processes.
+ Gather, interpret and communicate customer financial and technical requirements, layouts, and RFPs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Executive presence to represent Array with US customers.
+ Candidate must possess a history of strong leadership, practical engineering knowledge, and a proven track record for process management, financial optimization, and customer satisfaction.
+ Must be able to learn, understand, and explain new technologies.
+ Familiarity with and ability to lead a rapidly growing global applications engineering team.
+ Excellent analytical skills.
+ Excellent written, presentation and conversational skills.
+ Good computer skills in email, Salesforce, PowerPoint and Word.
Education and Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required; advanced degree is desired.
+ Minimum of 10 years’ experience in sales applications engineering or equivalent sales support role, including 5 years of management experience.
+ Ability to manage a national sales footprint.
+ Experience in the solar market is required, recognition as an industry thought leader is highly desired.
