This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with a mechanical engineering background \(or similar\) who has recently earned their Ph\.D\. to collaborate with staff on experimental design, implementation, data analysis, and model development for hydrogen systems\. Experimentally validated models are used to quantitatively assess the risk of hydrogen refueling infrastructure for fuel cell vehicles, and therefore must be valid for its range of use in these systems, including both cryogenic and high\-pressure hydrogen\. Our goal is to advance the fundamental understanding hydrogen dispersion, ignition, and flame behavior, and inform safety codes and standards for cryogenic and high\-pressure hydrogen systems\.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Collaborate on the design and implementation of experimental platforms and test plans to study specific aspects of hydrogen behavior
+ Assist in running experiments involving optical diagnostics and high\-powered lasers to measure hydrogen dispersion, ignition and flames
+ Develop and improve of models of hydrogen dispersion and flame behavior, including liquid hydrogen pooling and vaporization, using data for validation
+ Develop methods for, and analyze experimental data and compare results to models
+ Communicate findings to colleagues, customers and the larger scientific community through presentations, technical reports and articles suitable for publication in high\-impact journals
+ A PhD in mechanical engineering or a related field
+ Laboratory experience in the dispersion, ignition and/or combustion of fluids \(gas or liquid\)
+ A record of first\-author or co\-authored scientific publications in peer\-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
+ Strong understanding of reacting and non\-reacting turbulent flows
+ Experience with cryogenic fluids and laser\-based diagnostics
+ Proficiency in data processing \(including image manipulation with Python or Matlab\)
+ Laboratory experience working with pressurized and cryogenic systems
+ Practice with experimental design \(including safety planning\)
+ Collaborative work habits – ability to effectively leverage available expertise
+ Inclusive research approach – ability to work with a diverse group of scientists and engineers

We are the Hydrogen and Materials Science team\! We provide guidance to both Sandia and the Nation on the interaction of hydrogen with all types of materials\. We perform scientific and engineering research to develop fundamental understanding on the aging of materials in gaseous environments, including hydrogen, and applies this understanding to determine its effects on the performance and reliability of materials relevant to Sandia’s energy mission\. We conduct research and development for the Fuel Cell Technologies Office \(FCTO\), part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy\. Our work covers diverse areas, including analyzing hydrogen’s long\-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and initiating hydrogen storage and fuel cell market transformation strategies to bring technological advancements towards broad\-based commercial availability\.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\) security clearance\.

Members of the workforce \(MOWs\) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification \(UPIV\) process\. Access includes physical and/or cyber \(logical\) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology \(IT\) systems\. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals\. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF\-85 \(Questionnaire for Non\-Sensitive Positions\) and OF\-306 \(Declaration of for Federal Employment\)\. An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber \(logical\) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract\. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately\. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date\.
