This position reports to the Vice President, Accounting and will be responsible for all indirect tax matters for the company including performing state & local tax research, tax planning & modeling, tax system & software implementations & maintenance, due diligence, audits, and handling tax controversies with various tax authorities.
Oversee the enterprise-wide efforts on sales & use, gross receipts and excise tax matters related to the development, construction and operation of Clearway’s energy generation assets. Activities include:
+ Ensure compliance with sales & use, gross receipts and excise tax obligations in state and local jurisdictions where Clearway has business operations.
+ Deliver a full range of state and local indirect tax services including tax research, preparation of technical memorandums, exemption certificates, contract reviews, drafting correspondence, and counseling Clearway professionals on the effect of new or proposed legislation.
+ Review and prepare tax models for projects in development to optimize tax outcomes.
+ Conduct review of state and local indirect tax returns and account reconciliations.
+ Coordinate internal and external defense of state audits.
+ Oversee multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze sales & use and other indirect taxes to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits and incentives.
+ In close collaboration with the Accounting, Procurement and IT departments, analyze and make recommendations on business and process improvement to optimize Clearway’s operations.
+ Serve as primary business contact for Clearway’s sales & use tax software systems.
Knowledge & Skills:
+ Extensive knowledge of state and local sales & use, gross receipts and excise tax regimes and compliance requirements;
+ Ability to proactively identify opportunities to minimize/recover sales and use tax payments and ensure compliance with state and local collection and remittance requirements;
+ Excel financial modeling skills important, with strong competency in PowerPoint;
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
+ Ability to formulate and articulate viewpoints (written and verbal) in a clear, persuasive and succinct manner;
+ Proven organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple concurrent efforts and provide high-quality deliverables accurately and on time.
+ Ability to work well in a fast-paced, team-oriented, collaborative environment that emphasizes attention to detail, meeting deadlines and working together to achieve company-wide objectives;
+ Demonstrated self-starter with a positive “can do” attitude and a passion for excellence in embracing company goals and initiatives;
Experience & Education:
+ Bachelor's degree in accounting (preferred) finance or business is required.
+ CPA, preferred
+ 3+ years’ experience in supervising and/or leading direct reports including hiring, annual reviews, delivering constructive feedback and directing work of others.
+ 5 years tax experience in accounting (including in public accounting) with a state and local tax focus.
+ 5+ years tax software experience required (Vertex preferred). Experience with consumers use tax software implementations (preferred).
+ Manufacturing industry experience (preferred).
+ SAP experience (preferred).
+ Possess strong research, writing and interpersonal skills.
+ Demonstrated ability and desire to perform in a high-energy, dynamic environment.
