Job Description

UpEnergy is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Project Manager to lead technical work associated with our existing and new carbon offset projects. The Project manager will be responsible for the coordinating teams of consultants who conduct the monitoring and auditing of a growing portfolio of carbon offset projects.  In addition, the Project Manager will work with 3rd party consultants to create documentation and manage the approval process of new carbon emissions reduction projects focused on household products such as efficient cookstoves, water treatment devices, household solar systems, and other energy saving devices.

The position requires strong organizational, writing, and research experience, as well as a strong technical background, excellent analytical skills, and practical business thinking.  The ideal candidate will have project management experience and strong attention to detail. We seek a candidate with experience or familiarity with the design and management of carbon offset projects including the drafting and design of Project Design Documents (PDDs), managing projects through validation, verification, and registration, and the oversight of regular project monitoring, audits, and carbon credit issuance cycle. A track record of management of Clean Development Mechanism, Gold Standard or Verra projects is a plus. Experience with distributed household products such as cookstoves and safe water systems is a double bonus.

The Project Manager will be responsible for managing the execution of all aspects of project development and project monitoring on multiple projects in multiple countries. The position will require travel to existing and new UpEnergy project locations. UpEnergy prefers a candidate who can be initially based in or near our office in Muyenga, Kampala, Uganda.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop strategy to ensure products distributed by UpEnergy generate carbon credits commensurate with the emissions they reduce.
  • Manage a complex calendar of project monitoring and audit activities including field monitoring teams, reporting and documentation teams, DOEs, and UpEnergy’s own data team to issue carbon credits on time.
  • Manage teams of consultants to ensure monitoring and reporting quality and oversee the execution of all monitoring, reporting, and auditing requirements.
  • Research and write project documentation, in collaboration with a team of 3rd party experts. Documentation includes monitoring plans, Project Design Documents (PDDs), and monitoring reports.
  • Work with UpEnergy’s data team to continuously improve and integrate data capture with carbon monitoring objectives.
  • Support due diligence and new project origination on projects worldwide by developing models of carbon savings from household products.
  • Analyze and mitigate potential risks to carbon projects;
  • Provide monitoring and evaluation support to UpEnergy’s social impact oriented programs that we combine with product distribution.  

Desired Skills, Characteristics, and Experience:

  • Positivity and high expectations of self and team combined with a passion for fighting climate change and serving low income customers.
  • Experience in the design and development of carbon offset projects, particularly projects deploying distributed technologies using methodologies or protocols that involve statistical sampling.
  • Expertise in project management and demonstrated ability to coordinate complex projects with a large number of stakeholders to deliver results on time.
  • Solid quantitative skills, mastery of Microsoft Excel, and proficiency in statistical analysis.
  • Expertise in household energy use and carbon emissions modeling
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to self-motivate and work both independently and in a collaborative team setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of global carbon policy, carbon standards, and carbon methodologies and protocols
  • Clear understanding of scientific research design, statistics, and quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Familiarity with project finance a huge plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree in related field preferred. Fluent English required.
