Job Description

Are you a passionate advocate for wild salmon in B.C.? Do you have experience with digital storytelling, including video and audio content creation, and live streaming? Are you comfortable communicating complex and controversial issues with a diversity of audiences from multiple demographics, locations and political identities? Well then we have a role for you!

Watershed Watch Salmon Society is seeking a Multimedia Storyteller to create engaging digital content for our social media channels. With the guidance of our Communications Manager and other members of our team, the Multimedia Storyteller will profile our staff, allies, and our respective work on related issues to produce digital content including photographs, videos and infographics, to help advance our efforts to protect wild salmon.

The successful applicant will develop skills in environmental communication, public relations, community engagement, and small-scale project management. They will be offered training in a variety of communications-related areas and have the opportunity to learn about wild salmon and advocacy.

This is a 16 week Canada Summer Jobs funded position. As such, all candidates must meet the specific CSJ eligibility requirements. Please read the prerequisites carefully before applying!

Position Responsibilities

  • Learn about and proficiently communicate the issues Watershed Watch works on.

  • If and when appropriate, attend and document public events on behalf of Watershed Watch.
  • Work with staff to plan our general outreach and communications strategies.
  • Support social media strategy and online engagement with fellow non-profits and supporters.

  • Create digital assets for Watershed Watch’s social media accounts and interact with followers.

  • Provide material for use in our collaborative campaigns, CodeBlueBC.ca, SafeSalmon.ca, and HeartoftheFraser.ca.

  • Research and create social media graphics, basic animations, short videos and data visualizations for use on Watershed Watch’s digital channels.

  • Record and broadcast short pieces of live content on social channels.

  • Conduct video and/or audio interviews with staff, partners or volunteers to create content for digital communication channels or events.

  • Edit, export and upload new and existing video and audio content.

  • Organize and maintain a variety of files and records related to the work; develop and maintain cross-reference docketing and archival systems for production jobs.

  • Assist staff with occasional administrative and clerical tasks.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Desired level of education: Post-secondary (university, community college, CEGEP, technical institute); this position is ideal for students who have recently graduated or are working towards their degree in digital media, communications or journalism.
  • Able to work from home (or other independent work space).

    This is a Canada Summer Jobs position and all candidates must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and

  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

    While not required, the following will be additional assets:

  • a valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle (vehicle use and parking will be reimbursed);

  • access to a computer and other equipment for the job (e.g. camera) (Watershed Watch can provide software and equipment as needed); and

  • a cell phone (usage will be reimbursed).

 

Core Competencies

  • You have some knowledge of issues facing B.C.’s wild salmon and the waters they swim in and are comfortable acting as an advocate for wild salmon.

  • You have experience with digital storytelling, including video/audio content creation and live streaming.

  • You are comfortable and competent in communicating about complex and controversial issues with a diversity of audiences from multiple demographics, locations and political identities.

  • You have experience with long-form writing and investigative reporting and are looking to grow these skills.

  • You are a proficient photographer, comfortable editing for web content.

  • You have a demonstrated passion for social media.

  • You are organized, self-motivated, and understand your role within the broader goals of our organization.

  • You are a competent written and verbal communicator.

  • You think creatively and react positively to challenging and changing circumstances.
