**Job Title: Data Scientist – Meteorology Analytics**
PG&E’s Meteorology Operations and Analytics team is one of the most impactful at the company, providing support across all aspects of PG&E’s utility operations through advanced modeling and monitoring capabilities. Our modelling program includes high resolution weather forecasting, utility fire risk forecasting, outage and storm forecasting, solar forecasting, electric and gas load forecasting, and hydro forecasting. The team has deployed a utility-mesonet with more than 600 weather stations, deployed over 125 high-resolution “Alert Wildfire” cameras and developed a fire detection and alert system using geosynchronous and polar-orbiting satellites. The team constructed an hourly 30-year high-resolution down-scaled climatology of weather and fuel models, operates a high-resolution weather-fuels coupled forecast model, and leverages fire spread and consequence simulations of >70 million fires igniting near overhead utility infrastructure daily.

We are looking for a full-time data scientist to join our team to design, develop and deploy operational models and tools leveraging rich meteorological datasets and utility-specific data. You will have a unique opportunity to contribute at in one or more of the areas above at the forefront of utility, meteorology, and fire science analytics.
In this role you will work as part of cross functional teams, including data scientists, meteorologists, cloud engineers, GIS analysts, engineers, project and product managers, leadership, and subject matter experts to develop and enhance operational applications and tools. You will have the opportunity to solve impactful problems facing the utility and the state of California and work on complex technical projects every day.
+ Develop, deploy, and maintain operational predictive models and tools dependent on weather and other utility data (e.g., outage data).
+ Assists in the development and management of meteorological and other data systems and visualization.
+ Understand and apply statistical and analytical modeling methods such as classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection, deep learning, etc. to identify opportunities for operational improvements and insights.
+ Perform advanced analysis and meteorological studies.
+ Appropriately document data sources, methodology, and model evaluation metrics.
+ Develop and present technical and summary presentations
+ Support business partners to advance business decisions based on actionable insights from analysis and studies.
+ Assist the operational forecasting team with data analysis and modeling during severe storm and fire events.
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Applied Sciences, Statistics, or similar.
+ Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in data science or advanced analytics OR Master’s Degree
+ Demonstrated collaboration or paired development work history with effective communication skills.
+ Demonstrated experience with model development for operational forecasting, or other complex quantitative modeling.
+ Track record of writing clear and well documented code, preferably in Python, R, etc.
+ SQL proficiency and experience working with relational databases.
+ Strong understanding of statistics and experience developing supervised & unsupervised machine learning models.
+ Demonstrated experience with data science best practices, such as version control via Git or similar.
+ Development experience on Linux, SQL servers, and AWS (s3, EC2, Redshift).
+ General knowledge of weather forecasting, meteorological data, and California geography and climate.
+ Ability to develop, deploy, and maintain operational models and databases.
+ Understanding of GIS related concepts.
+ Ability to solve complex problems with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
