Job Description

Oceans of Energy is a young company which focuses on the development of floating systems at sea for renewable energy generation. We offer access to a unique source of clean energy to islands and coastal regions, without competition for scarce land and with cost reductions compared to conventional energy sources. We do so with radical innovation and a well-balanced team, consisting of experienced top-seniors and highly talented starters. As our first projects at sea are being realized this year, we need to strengthen our environmental team. Are you a marine biologist or ecologist and excited to contribute your specific (tropical marine) knowledge to drive innovation in the fast-paced environment of a tech startup? Do you want to help accelerate the energy transition and at the same contribute to sustainable ocean projects? Join our ambitious team where you can have an impact and see direct results of your contributions.

The Marine Biologist intern plays a key role in identifying and setting up pilot projects all around the world to demonstrate the suitability of Oceans of Energy’s offshore floating solar technology to the purpose of ecological restoration. Specifically to assist – in the form of active physical restoration- the natural recovery processes of coral ecosystems or other carbonate organisms by using a technique called mineral accretion.

Responsibilities can include:

  • Design (with engineers) an optimal synergetic function between our floating platform concept and the mineral accretion principle
  • Set up and hands-on building of small field test (in The Netherlands) to check design
  • Establish contacts and partnerships to initiate demo-projects worldwide
  • Assist in the writing of grants; white paper(s)
  • Design environmental monitoring program around pilot projects

Qualifications and Qualities:

  • Master’s degree, preferably in Tropical Marine Biology/Ecology or related discipline
  • 1-5 years/seasons of experience in setting-up and executing fieldwork abroad, preferably related to coral restoration
  • Knowledge of marine aquafarming, micro-fragmentation, marine resource management a plus
  • Hands-on and tech-savvy
  • Startup mentality: enthusiastic, independent, and getting things done with simple means
  • Good communicator
  • Self-directed and quick learner
  • Excellent English language skills and affinity with writing

Important to note that we can only take STUDENTS (currently enrolled in a program) and also only students with a EU visa. We prefer students that can stay at least 4-5 months.
