(PG 13 - $13.04/hour) One or two roving 3 to 4-person crew responsible for routine trail maintenance and technical trail projects in VT State forests and parks. Crew works in both northern VT and southern VT and travels between work areas. Crew may stay at nearby state parks during the work week. Basic First Aid & CPR required. Previous trail experience and chain saw use preferred (Game of Logging). Must be able to work in back country. Apply online to “Barre Regional Office” (Region 4). Definition: The State Trail Crew Leader prepares for, and leads, a two - five person trail crew on recreation and trail projects in State Parks and on State Lands. The Crew Leader is responsible for supervising the work of the team, being accountable for the quality and completeness of the work projects undertaken, and developing an evacuation plan for every work site including the location of the nearest hospital and where cell service is available. Under the supervision of the seasonal Trail Coordinator(s), the Crew Leader will plan the logistics involved in having the proper tools and materials for the completion of each job, as well as the crew accommodations while working on projects. Examples of Work Performed: The Crew Leader will perform pre-season site visits with the seasonal and full-time Trails Coordinators. On these site visits the Crew Leader will need to understand the entire scope of the project in order to organize the tools, materials, and accommodations necessary to see the project to completion. Once the scope of the project is understood the Crew Leader will need to order any materials needed and properly managing the budget that the Trail Coordinator has set for each individual project. The Crew Leader will play an active role in helping the Trail Coordinators develop and present trainings to the Crew Members. The Crew Leader will be responsible for the crew’s safety when on projects assessing weather, environmental, tool, and highline system conditions and for developing an evacuation plan for every work site including the location of the nearest hospital and where cell service is available. The Crew Leader will be responsible for all work to be accomplished at the high standards set forth by the Trail Coordinators and best practices for trail maintenance and construction. The Crew Leader will supervise the set up and use of highline systems, as well as repairing, using and maintaining equipment such as Griphoists, chainsaws, and rock drills. The Crew Leader is responsible for operating and supervising the operation of heavier equipment such as mini-excavators and walk-behind, motorized wheelbarrows. There will also be varying degrees of carpentry work needed on projects ranging from the building of kiosks to the construction of footbridges. Documents in detail the condition of trails and the work accomplished by the trail crew. Maintaining crew paperwork and ensuring that time sheets are filled out properly and handed in on time. The Crew Leader is also required to make sure the Trail Crew represents the Department when interacting with the public when on projects. The Crew Leader will perform technical rockwork and need to use a chainsaw to clear blow-downs and possibly mill lumber on project sites. The Crew Leader will also be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the rental vehicle and paperwork associated with the use of the rental vehicle. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Extensive knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in trail construction, maintenance, and signing. Minimum of 100 hours spent using a highline set up for trail work. Knowledge of equipment maintenance and operation. Chainsaw certification or willingness to gain certificate through provided training. Knowledge of trail design standards for various trails uses. Knowledge of environmental issues related to trails management. Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to estimate materials, and to order and control materials to effect the most economical use. Ability to plan, layout, assign, inspect, and supervise the work of employees, contractors, and volunteers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work effectively with trail and other recreational groups and organizations. Ability to solve problems, negotiate, and build consensus. First Aid and CPR Certified. Environmental Factors: Duties are performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Some lifting of heavy items may be required. Manual dexterity is needed to operate equipment and use tools. A valid driver's license is required for travel to work sites. The Crew Leader will have to provide their own food and camping gear for the work week, and own lodging on personal time. Minimum Qualifications for Application: Education: High School Diploma Experience: Three years of progressive experience in trail and/or park management, development, construction, and maintenance. Note: Additional course work in parks, recreation, leisure facilities management, natural resources management, or a related field may be substituted for the experience on a semester for six months basis.
