: We are seeking an Intern Year Round \- R&D Undergrad\. Students will learn basic laboratory skills as part of a high\-performing research team and will present the results of their work at group meetings or summer symposia\. Students will be expected to demonstrate increasing levels of independence and responsibility and must show a commitment to operate in and contribute to a safe operating environment\. Some positions prefer previous laboratory experience\. Students will support one of various technical programs in one of the following areas: + Nanomaterials and/or biomaterials synthesis and characterization for energy and bioimaging applications + Chemical synthesis, characterization and precursor development for materials science applications + Development and characterization of materials and processes for Advanced Manufacturing or renewable energy applications\. Required: You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0 + Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U\.S\. citizenship Additional Requirements: + Enrolled in college\-level coursework in chemistry, biology, materials science or engineering + Interested in developing basic laboratory skills \(i\.e\. lab safety, chemical synthesis techniques, characterization of materials, data recording and processing, etc\.\) + Strong written and oral communication skills + Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite software + Reliability, critical thinking, and organizational skills, as demonstrated by school, job, or volunteer activities or as noted by references Desired: + Completed college\-level coursework in chemistry, biology, materials science, or engineering + Additional laboratory experience or coursework in chemistry, materials science, biology, or nanomaterials + High\-level skills in Microsoft Office Suite or other technical software for data collection, data processing, modeling, or preparation of manuscripts, presentations, or posters \(MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, etc\.\) + Mature oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated by coursework or project assignments Department Description: The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities\. Specifically, activities in our research groups include: synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups; understanding different routes to nano\-scale particles and thin films; understanding the rheology of metal\-particle inks and ceramic slurries; investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis; and investigating the self\-assembly of nanoparticles in 2\- and 3\-dimensions\. Processing research and development includes: providing a Direct Write capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates; electrospining of fibers of vastly different compositions; and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments\. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators\. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico\. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States\.
