Position Summary
The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve. This engineering position is within the Distributed Generation (DG) Engineering team in the Distributed Energy Group (DEG). The DG Engineering team supports the interconnection of renewable energy to the distribution grid by ensuring technical and regulatory compliance of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as solar PV, battery energy storage, and microgrid projects. This Engineer III or Senior Engineer role will be responsible for performing in-depth DER interconnection studies, refining interconnection study processes, and recommending and implementing process improvement initiatives. The candidate needs to have a technical background and be comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide technical expertise for interconnection studies and other team projects of increasing scope and complexity to ensure adherence to interconnection standards and utility best practices for safe and effective interconnection to the utility grid across multiple jurisdictional areas
Perform power system modeling and analysis utilizing tools such as CYME and PSCAD
Ensure that key regulatory interconnection standards related to timelines and communications, among other criteria, are achieved
Collaborate with other DG team engineers to support internal and external project stakeholders throughout the DER interconnection process
Support development of policies, processes, work plans, training, and best practices for DER programs or initiatives
Actively participate in special assignments, including representing the DG team for DER-related issues among other teams within Duke Energy, such as Renewable Integration, Renewables Service Center, Distribution Planning, Distribution Standards, DCC, Large Account Management, etc.
Required/Basic Qualifications

Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 4 years engineering experience
Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience (without a Professional Engineer certification) or 5 years of engineering experience (with a Professional Engineer certification).
Desired Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the utility industry
Knowledge of utility distribution system electrical design, operation, and reliability
Experienced at reading and evaluating electrical one-line diagrams
Familiarity with DER systems such as solar PV, battery energy storage, and microgrids
Familiarity with DER interconnection policies and procedures
Understanding of more complex principles of Power Engineering and Power System Analysis
Knowledge of distribution system study tools and technologies such as CYME and PSCAD
Proficient in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and preparing and presenting recommendations
Increasingly proficient in principles of project management
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present information and provide direction to others
Demonstrated effective teamwork skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day direction while maintaining performance expectations
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and tasks
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
Working Conditions
Hybrid β Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the listed Duke Energy facility.
Specific Requirements
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
