Learn about NREL’s critical objectives: NREL's Mission and Vision.
NREL focuses on creative answers to today's energy challenges. To further American leadership and innovation, we are seeking a highly experienced, diligent, and innovative thought leader in the connectivity between our energy and transportation infrastructure to develop and guide research, development, and technology implementation efforts.
Work to date has shown that increasing levels of transportation electrification can either place strain on the electric grid or strengthen it. The primary function of this role will be to identify solutions and commercialization pathways that move us towards the latter. Working as part of a team, you will build from NREL’s extensive capabilities and expertise in transportation electrification to enhance affordability, cyber security, and resiliency for both drivers and electric ratepayers.
Doing so will require extensive knowledge of the touchpoints between our energy and transportation infrastructure, particularly the existing and needed digital interface between the two. Working from vehicle-grid integration as the core, it’s expected you will be able to identify related and tangential needs for connected infrastructure spanning the transportation and energy sectors, including the frameworks needed to support cyber and cyber-physical security to protect critical infrastructure.
Success in the position will require a balance of strategic leadership, hands-on project execution, and multi-stakeholder engagement with a focus on informing and producing demonstrable outcomes. You will be responsible for both leading projects as well as developing new strategic opportunities for yourself and our team. This will include working with both the public and private sector as well as academic institutions to identify research needs and gaps, implement cutting edge technologies, validate performance in diverse conditions, and accelerate commercialization pathways that will enable American leadership. Specifically, you will identify and develop opportunities to leverage NREL’s ARIES capabilities, which represent a multi-year, multi-million-dollar investment in laboratory capabilities necessary to develop and demonstrate technology solutions at an unprecedented scale, de-risking private sector investment and informing cost effective implementation.
The successful candidate will be both visionary and detail oriented. You will have a strong intuition on how various stakeholders needs map to technology solutions and have demonstrated success with aligning the two. You will recognize and pivot quickly if outcomes are not likely to be achieved. You will be able to communicate to an executive audience as well as to those involved in technical research. Experience working in and with public and private sectors as well as familiarity with Department of Energy laboratory operations, business practices and capabilities is preferred.
Additional responsibilities may include mentoring junior staff and supporting additional activities as requested.
