POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manager-Engineering and Projects will lead and manage all functions and activities of the Plant Engineering Team and provide technical guidance, coaching, counseling, and formal supervision to assigned engineering staff and others in support of producing high quality, timely and cost-effective solutions to technical and business objectives. Responsible for the development and assignment of short- and long-term goals, supporting department goals and initiatives, performance evaluations, and high achievement of results.
Position will be able to provide high-level management skills.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages professional employees and/or supervisors to manage large, complex technical or business support or production operations team(s); Is accountable for the performance and results of a team within own discipline or function; Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges; Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance from Plant Manager, Chief Fossil Operator and other Director-Level Financial Stakeholders; Provides technical guidance to employees, colleagues and/or customers/stakeholders.
Accountable for providing the following engineering services; technical direction and support to generating stations and other departments, cost estimating and capital project justification, and detailed engineering and design of modifications to existing plants.
Oversees engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments. Designs and scales up processes, instruments, equipment, and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. Plans, designs and estimates time and cost, and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems and components. Analyzes and develops solutions to engineering problems related to equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. Develops and applies engineering standards and procedures and provides advice on issues within the engineering field.
Directs the activities of a technical group responsible for providing expertise in the conventional engineering disciplines to ensure satisfactory technical performance of all plants. These technical groups include mechanical, civil, electrical, and I&C engineering.
Responsible for the management of station modifications and capital engineering projects to ensure completion of authorized projects in a technically competent, timely and cost-effective manner. The incumbent manages and coordinates the engineering required for modifications and directs outside engineering organizations.
Provides long range planning, studies, and evaluations; ensures conformance with the technical and regulatory requirements for all aspects of generation activities to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient operations in accordance with corporate policies, all applicable laws, regulations, and licenses.
Participates in industry committees and engineering codes to ensure company knowledge and compliance. Establishes goals and objectives for Talen Montana Engineering group and communications expectations to staff. Monitors goals through respective department performance indicators.
Manages the coordination between plant and all supporting organizations for construction projects; monitoring the status of plans and schedules for all plant commitments and proposes action to correct detected deficiencies; monitoring plans and schedules.
Has accountability to support or directly control projects across Talen Montana, and spending on the projects that are in the high tens of million dollars annually.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelorβs degree in engineering
PE License encouraged
10 years of relevant power plant related experience
At least 5 yearsβ experience supervising technical, supervisory and administrative personnel required. Strong leadership and motivational skills required
An ability to plan, coordinate and direct varied programs and tasks directly involved with the engineering component of the plant but directly influencing the entire plant operation. Analyze and interpret data to make sound professional judgments and recommendations. An ability to manage and motivate others and deal persuasively with all other managers and plant employees as well as a wide range of stakeholders
Must have excellent managerial and personal skills to work effectively with the wide range of customers/stakeholders
Must be an effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to adapt communication style to different audiences, including active listening, clear presentation skills, and the capacity to provide feedback
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, and ability to adapt and become proficient in various site- and corporate-specific software applications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated ability to be an alternate to and successor for the plant manager.
Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and improve trusting relationships, all while thriving in a fast-paced, team environment.
Must have strong leadership skills, with a special emphasis in coaching, decision making, organization, and reliability.
Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization as well as external stakeholders.
Must have demonstrated the ability to establish and reach continuous improvement goals and initiatives.
Must have demonstrated tenacity in driving through obstacles to achieve results and maintain project timelines.
