Your Opportunity

Two Permanent Full Time Positions.

Capital Power is currently looking for two (2) Sr. Legal Counsel roles, one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. reporting to the VP of Legal, Corporate, Senior Legal Counsel is responsible for providing practical business oriented legal advice to management on all company related matters.

This includes support for (i) M&A, development, construction, and commercial projects, (ii) operations, human resources, tax and treasury, and regulatory functions, (iii) procurement and information technology licensing agreements, (iv) dispute resolution matters, and (vi) power and environmental trading functions.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Acting as the prime legal subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders.
  • Developing and executing legal strategies to support the achievement of business goals.
  • Providing timely and practical legal advice to ensure effective decision-making and project execution.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand their objective and provide legal support to drive successful outcomes in complex legal matters.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and negotiating general corporate and commercial agreements and, where appropriate, engage and manage external legal counsel to assist with such matters.
  • Monitoring and advising on laws and regulations affecting the company.
  • Developing and maintaining self-help tools for internal business partners such as standard form contracts, contracts playbooks, and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Proactively analyze legal issues and implications of business decisions and provide clear, actionable and innovative recommendations to mitigate risks.
  • Assessing contracts, transactions, and agreements to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Analyzing and identify issues impacting operational performance and establishes initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure that the legal services provided to our internal business partners align with the needs and strategies of these various groups, including but not limited to shared services, operations, and business development while maintaining a governance and risk mitigation role.

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Completed Bachelor of Law degree.

  • License to practice in law in Alberta.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in legal practice with a focus on corporate and commercial law.
  • Expert analytical, drafting and negotiating skills.
  • Knowledge of business and regulatory environments in which Capital Power operates.
  • Private practice (medium to large law firm) or equivalent in-house experience.

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Excellent collaboration and influence skills
  • Confidence, ability to learn quickly and to manage ambiguity

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work based in our downtown Edmonton / Calgary Office.

  • Travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices throughout North America.
