Talen Energy is seeking an Engineer with working knowledge in High Energy Piping (HEP) and Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) Inspections, to work in our Technical Inspection Program (TIP) group. The position would be a part of the fossil generation central engineering group. The base work location for the successful candidate will be in Allentown, PA.

The position will support fleet-wide engineering initiatives for the Talen Energy fossil fleet and would serve as a subject matter expert in HEP/FAC for multiple Talen Energy power plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Specific assignments may include developing inspection plans, monitoring and assessing the condition of critical plant equipment, tracking failures and repairs, managing and conducting field inspections, recommending repair or replacement approaches for equipment issues to the plants, developing short term and long-term risk mitigation strategies, providing input into developing scoping and estimating plans for projects, preparing technical specifications, and providing technical guidance as requested to plant engineering, Contractors, and plant maintenance staff during outage and non-outage work. Primary general engineering responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical leader in Talen Energy’s HEP and FAC inspection program.

  • Provide support related to the mechanical integrity of piping systems, piping support systems and piping stress analysis.

  • Work with vendor to maintain HEP/FAC inspection database, update risk ranking spreadsheets, identify inspection points for upcoming outage, and work with the plants and Contractors to plan and facilitate the inspections and repairs if needed.

  • Provide technical expertise and consultation to identify/resolve equipment and system problems as they relate to the inspection program.,.

  • Evaluate inspection results for Fitness for Duty

  • Works with minimal supervision in a variety of engineering functions either in field locations or home office, which may include activities to assess plant component condition or function and to develop design or specification packages to add/modify systems and components.

  • Act as a technical resource for plant-based engineers and other engineering disciples.

  • Builds relationships that will facilitate knowledge transfer, cross functional knowledge of related work groups, and ability to present work products effectively.

  • At times serves as project sponsor and presents the results of the project team efforts. May be required to review or, depending on position level, approve, design work completed by contractors and be a key interface with others

  • Provide support for outages, emergent issues and generation challenges which may require shift work/off hours.

  • Ability to inspect structures, systems, and components in the industrial areas of fossil power plants.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from a college or university accredited by ABET or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. Level/Title of engineer will be based on years of related engineering experience

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Power Plant Experience

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania, or a Licensed Professional Engineer in another state with the ability to obtain Pennsylvania Licensing within a year of hire.

  • Expertise with the application of industry codes and standards such as ASME B31.1, API 510, API 570, and API 579.

  • Understanding of Non-Destructive Examinations (NDE) techniques and interpreting the results

  • Familiarity with high temperature and high energy piping systems and failure mechanisms.
