As a Water Resources Engineer or Engineer-in-Training, you will join our Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta office as part of our Western Surface Water Engineering team. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of water resources projects with responsibilities as follows:

  • Manage a variety of projects related to water resources management, including duties related to: budget/cost control; schedule tracking; and client management.
  • Provide technical input and direction surface water projects and designs, for both private and public clients. Projects may include: stream restoration/stabilization design; hydraulic structures (e.g. outfalls, stormwater management facilities, weirs) design and assessment; master drainage plans, flood assessment and mitigation.
  • Generate conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design related to: river engineering; stream restoration; eco-hydraulics; bioengineering; small hydraulic structures; bank protection; road/pipeline crossings; and mine-water management
  • Prepare design drawings associated with stream restoration/stabilization projects, including Issued For Tender/Construction drawing sets
  • Provide technical support and mentoring to less experienced team members
  • Support business development initiatives including drafting proposals
  • Build strong client relationships and liaise with stakeholders
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team on river process-related projects including subwatershed studies and environmental assessments
  • Direct and support field data collection exercises as well as data synthesis/analysis; including site reconnaissance, surveying (e.g.: RTK, UAV) fluvial geomorphology assessments, construction supervision and field engineering
  • Work with regulatory agencies and clients to address project-specific challenges
  • Obtain relevant provincial and federal regulatory approvals for construction projects
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and work plans
  • Occasional travel within Alberta and BC to support projects or business development initiatives
  • Actively participate in Matrix strong Health and Safety culture

What We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in water resources engineering specifically related to the design, construction, and project management of water resources projects, with a particular focus on river engineering.
  • A member-in-training or Professional Engineer designation (or candidacy) with APEGA or EGBC is required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources, Environmental, or Civil Engineering, or related field. A graduate degree would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with natural channel design, fish habitat restoration, surface water management, hydraulic/hydrologic and sediment transport models, bridges. Experience gained in a consulting environment would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of current regulations and legislation
  • Ability to effectively manage projects of various sizes and complexity simultaneously
  • Experience in writing technical reports and proposals, and giving presentations to multi-stakeholder groups
  • Strong ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and written
  • Self-motivated individual, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of hydrology, aquatic biology and engineering models (e.g. HEC-RAS) would be an asset
  • Experience with design and drafting software such as ArcGIS and AutoCAD would be an asset
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions and a clean driving record.

This is a permanent position with a hourly rate range of $36.06-$50.10, starting pay is dependent on multiple factors, such as skills, experience and work location.
