Scottish Power is a leading energy company, committed to delivering sustainable and innovative energy solutions. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Senior Engineer (Telecoms) to join our Transmission Operations team within SP Energy Networks.

As a member of the Transmission Operations team, you will be responsible for the interface between the wider Telecoms team and the Operations team. This role offers a hybrid working pattern, involving both office work and travel between various sites, including substations. Therefore, possessing a valid driving license is essential.

What you’ll be doing

Your responsibilities will include change management, which involves analysing planned changes in the telecoms environment and approving them on behalf of the operations department. You will also manage vendors, working with them to maintain and improve operational performance and practices.

Performance management will be another key area, where you will set and review operational KPIs, observe network communication alarms on our systems, identify recurring problems, and develop solutions. Proactive problem management is essential, as you will seek out and manage network vulnerabilities, working closely with cross-functional teams within Scottish Power and vendors to implement changes and improvements to the network.

Additionally, you will participate in incident resolution activities, maintaining communications with key stakeholders during emergency responses. Post fault analysis will be part of your role, where you will carry out detailed analyses from the interrogation of our operational systems.

Lastly, you will conduct on-site testing in a substation environment using test equipment to diagnose issues or find faults.

What you’ll bring

  • Relevant Engineering qualification (HND/BSc/BEng) or at least 5 years relevant experience in a similar role
  • Broad operational experience, particularly with Telecoms equipment
  • Basic electrical knowledge and understanding of Power Systems including SCADA and protection
  • Experience of working in substations
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of Operational Telecoms in a Power System Environment (PDH, SDH, MPLS-TP)
  • An understanding of the protocols used within Operational telecoms (VF, X.21, C37.94, NTP)
  • Experience in using telecoms test equipment to diagnose issues.
  • Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.
  • Broad operational experience, particularly with Telecoms equipment

You should have a working knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures, and working practices, as well as a working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation. Additionally, you should be aware of network development policies and procedures and possess developed customer service skills. Knowledge of network and business data and network management systems is essential, along with general commercial and regulatory awareness.

What’s in it for you

As well as a competitive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits. With our pension scheme, we’ll double match your contribution up to a company contribution of 10%.
